This year's Academy Awards, despite all the grandiose song and dance,
were just ok. They played it safe, lacking in smart humour and that
sense of the theatrical we so look forward to in the movies they honour.
Much the same can be said about the ladies and gentlemen who tread the
red carpet. Sure, the dresses were pretty, but is that really all there
is? Where was the avant-garde, the innovative, the risky, and the
breathtaking? And where was all the Marchesa? As a lover of couture and
runway decadence, the plethora of simple yet elegant strapless ballgowns
bombarding the pre-show left me longing for Tilda Swinton. By the end
of the show I would have settled for Cher, Lady Gaga or even Bjork and
her swan. So instead of sharing with you a list of the best, a.k.a. the
prettiest, dresses of the evening (Charlize, Jennifer L., Amy, etc,
etc), I prefer to mix things up with some rankings of my own.
BEST PIXIE CUT
Halle Berry, I never thought anyone could wear short hair better than you, but Charlize Theron just may have stolen your crown! Anne Hathaway - well, at least you won an Oscar... |
MOST DARING & FASHION-FORWARD
Naomi Watts in Armani Prive gave us a modern take on a classic silhouette. Not to mention that cutouts are a major trend for Fall 13! |
BEST-DRESSED MALE
Chris Pine in Ermenegildo Zegna, for daring to go double-breasted. |
A close runner-up, Eddie Redmayne, for rocking velvet monogrammed slippers with his Alexander McQueen tux. |
MOST OVERLOOKED
Olivia Munn in Marchesa. You really can't go wrong with Marchesa. So why didn't this dress get more attention? |
BEST-DRESSED HOLLYWOOD LEGEND
Sally Field looked beautiful and ageless in her red Valentino, showing that at 66 years you can still rock a train. |
